Hong Kong Travelogue: Day Four

Ready for another eat and eat and sightsee day? :D

Breakfast is gonna be a classic: Congee!
Thought it'll be a nice change, compared to the usual egg-toast-macaroni meals we've been having.

A just for fun guide:
Cantonese congee is a type of rice porridge; the grains are cooked till its broken down, and the porridge is of a thick consistency.
Teochew rice porridge, on the other hand, has still visible grains and has more liquid/soup in nature.

Headed to Fa Yuen Street Market for Mui Kee Congee.
Fa Yuen Street Market was recently renovated, so it may look different from the pictures on Google Maps.
Just look out for this building below!

Mui Kee Congee 妹記生滾粥品
3F Fa Yuen Street Market

Opening Hours:
7 am to 3 pm Daily

Nearest MRT: Mongkok 旺角
Exit B3, walk via the overhead bridges.

The boss personally cooks the congee, and he posed for the camera when he saw me taking a picture.
Hahah so sporting.
His staff also asked me if I wanted to interview him, LOL.

Menu!
Recommended items are Congee with Pork Meatball, Congee with Pig Viscera, and Congee with Sliced Fish.

Steamed Rice Roll 香港粉腸 - HKD$14
Finally! Also known as chee cheong fun , my favourite.
The rice rolls are soft and drizzled with the right amount of sesame oil and sweet-salty dark sauce.

Both of us ordered Congee with Sliced Fish 魚片粥 - HKD$30
Light and smooth congee, noms! The consistency isn't super thick, still slightly soupy.
The fish was fresh as well.
What did you expect, they get their supply directly from the market ;p

Sightseeing at Lantau Island !
Booked our cable car tickets online here. Skipped the long queue again !
Its cheaper than the original website by a bit.
#notanadvertisement #sayrealone

25 minutes ride to the island!
Loved the infinite sky and sea view from the cable car.

Again, thanks brave Levon!
Your sacrifice is much appreciated. :B

Making our way to the Tian Tan Buddha 天壇大佛

Couldn't resist them Maneki-nekos 招財貓.

No kidding, after climbing up I nearly died.
Half way through and I was already huffing and puffing like mad.. and Levon is damn steady, not even a sweat.
Conclusion: I gotta exercise more!

The round square with colorful flags..
Wait, I mean round plaza. :x

After the long climb, we decided to reward ourselves to the famous beancurd!
Eh supposedly they make it using the fresh spring water, that's why it's so smooth.. I dont believe. :x

Ordered Black sesame paste too!
Its slightly more watery than the usual ones I've had in Singapore.

Levon is peering suspiciously into the sugar jar..
They use red sugar for more fragrance, and you decide the amount of sweetness you prefer.

Sadly the beancurd wasn't nice at all. ):
Smooth but not extraordinary.

Le sister says I probably visited the wrong stall.

Lemme have em' donuts instead. :D

Here's one with pretty Levon (with wind in our hair)

And without wind. :B

Actually very grateful to Levon for bravely agreeing to take the cable car with me (she has fear of heights) ;p
She biased, cause she refused Bimb when we were talking about Seoul's Namsan Tower. HAHAH.

Lunch at the super famous Tim Ho Wan !
Tim Ho Wan is another Michelin Star dim sum restaurant.
I am curious about the differences in standards between the original, and Singapore's branch.

You can spot the gigantic sign from very far away!

Tim Ho Wan 添好運
GF,  9-11 Fuk Wing Street 福榮街

Opening Hours:
8 am – 9.30pm Daily

Nearest MTR: Sham Shui Po 深水埗
Exit B2, Walk straight down Fuk Wa St 福華街,
Turn into Pei Ho St 北河街 to Fuk Wing St 福榮街

As opposed to One Dim Sum, Tim Ho Wan doesn't have an English menu.
That's quite surprising, because if you think about it,
A business which expects tourists should have at least an English menu.
One Dim Sum's menu was multilingual, even more power.

Only the more popular items had English names.

Steamed Glutinous Rice with Chicken 古法糯米雞 - HKD$26
Glutinous rice and marinated chicken are wrapped in a lotus leaf and steamed.

The lotus leaf infuses the glutinous rice with a nice fragrance!
Not too jelat but we couldn't finish cause we were quite full. :x

Crispy Char Siew Bun 酥皮叉燒包 - HKD$18
Crispy Char Siew Bun.

No other description, except that its the best damn char siew bun I've ever eaten!
The crust is slightly sweet and crispy-fluffy, and the char siew interior is only slightly sweet.

Compared to Singapore's version, HK's is smaller.
However, I like HK's better, because the interior is less sweet, and the crust is more crispy.

Glutton mode again.

Fresh Prawn Dumpling 晶瑩鮮蝦餃 - HKD$26
Juicy fresh prawns wrapped in translucent skin.

Levon fought with me for this again. 'Nuff said. :D

Pan-Fried Carrot Cake 香煎蘿白糕 - HKD$15

Uh this one was a disappointment.
The exterior isn't crispy, and interior had the mealy too-soft texture.

Walked around Cheong Sha Wan St 長沙灣, which is a fashion wholesale area.
You can get some cheap buys here, but #wrongseason so none for us :x

At Sham Shui Po 深水埗 , Exit C2,  there's Apliu Street Flea Market, which has cheap electronics and watches.
This is also the place to get your local SIM cards.

Wanton Noodles of a different kind for dinner!
It was around the same area so we walked (and 順便 digest) there.

Lau Sum Kee Noodles 劉森記麵家
48 Kwelin Street 桂林街

Opening Hours:
12 pm to 1 am Daily

Nearest MTR: Sham Shui Po 深水埗
Exit D2, Walk straight on Kweilin St.

Menu ! All in Chinese.
湯麵 refers to noodle dishes in soup, 撈麵 refers to dry noodles.

There's a short queue, of 10 minutes waiting time during peak hours.
The store can be quite squeezy and cramped.

There's a branch just around the corner, but I heard it's not as nice from reviews so we stuck to the main branch.

Signature Wanton 招牌淨云吞 - HKD$26
Juicy pork wrapped in thin wanton skin.

The wanton was nice but not the soup. Sadly tastes like its MSG loaded.

Prawn Roe Noodles 蝦子撈麵 - HKD$33
Thin bamboo noodles tossed in dried prawn roe.

I like the bamboo noodles, which are quite springy.
But the dried prawn roe is too strong.. perhaps its an acquired taste.

Headed off to Mongkok for more shopping!

Mongkok is full of cosmetics stores - Sasa, Bonjour, Colormix.. and there's usually more than one of each along the same street. HAHA.

3CE also recently opened their HK flagship store there !
Slightly cheaper than what Singapore is selling,
but actually some Bonjour stalls have 3CE products in limited quantities too, and that's even cheaper.

As always, please check the item's manufacturing details e.g. date and country of origin before buying!
Dont say I never warn you, but we spotted some The Face Shop products, which were already out of production, on the shelfs in Bonjour. :x
